Italian French Bread

This bread is good,  This bread is great.  This bread is wonderful.  It is so good in fact that my family calls it “bad bread”.  I know that doesn’t make much logical sense, but it does to us.  It is so good, but it is probably really bad for you.  If you have guilt about it, you can serve it alongside a healthy salad.  If you don’t have guilt about it, you can serve it alongside spaghetti, lasagna, or another favorite Italian dish.

Italian French Bread

1 loaf French bread, cut in half lengthwise
1/2 cup mayonnaise (not Miracle Whip)
1/4 cup butter, softened
8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
1 TB Italian seasoning
Pepperoni slices, optional

Cut bread in half lengthwise and place on a baking sheet.

Mix mayo, butter, cheese, and seasoning together.  Put half of the mixture on each half of the bread.

Place pepperoni slices on the top of the cheese and butter mixture, if desired.

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown.  You may desire to broil the top at the end of the cooking time to achieve a golden brown, sizzling top.  Be sure to watch closely so it doesn’t burn.

The original recipe I have for this bread had twice as much butter (1 stick) and mayonnaise (1 cup).  Feel free to try the original recipe if you would like.  It sure was delicious, but I thought it was a little over the top.  It would drip grease on the plate when you ate the original.  So, I cut down on those two ingredients.  You can also choose to put the pepperoni slices on there or not.
Hope you enjoy this “bad” but also really good bread.
