Commercial Cleaning

Do you ever have those days?  Days where the last thing you feel like doing is cleaning your house or making dinner or anything else for that matter.  You feel like doing nothing.  Nada.  Zero.  Zilch.  Those days don’t come all that often for me, but they do come.  Sometimes it is a lazy attitude, but sometimes I literally hit an energy wall.  I am not sick, but I feel that I have nothing left to give.

I fantasize about sitting in front of the TV and just vegging out, but I feel guilty.  Slothful.  Lazy.  I think of the verse from Proverbs 6:10 (ESV) which says, “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”  Most days I literally do not take a break from 7am till 10pm, but days like that catch up with me sometimes.  When I hit a wall, this is what I do.

Commercial Cleaning
I give myself permission to sit down to take a break for a certain period of time, but make a plan with myself to do some commercial cleaning.  I might sit down to watch some HGTV or Food Network, but during the commercials it is cleaning time.
As soon as the commercial starts, I get up and start doing something.  Wiping down a toilet with a disposable wipe.  Sweep my kitchen floor.  Load the dishwasher.  Anything I need to do.  Commercial breaks seem to me to be about 2-3 minutes long.  You might think that is not a lot of time, but you will be amazed at what you can get done in 3 minutes.
When the program starts again, whether I am finished or not,  I come back to sit down until the next commercial break.  When the next commercial break comes I do the same thing.  Sort laundry.  Fold clothes.  Run the vacuum.
On days like these, it is hard for me to imagine spending an hour cleaning or doing laundry, but working for 3 minutes is so easy and doable for me mentally.  During an hour, you actually can get 15-20 minutes of cleaning done.  That is better than getting nothing done at all.
This method also works well on those days when you have a program that you really want to watch in real time like a football game on the weekends or a special program during prime time television, but you really don’t have time to take a three hour break from life.  Don’t be lazy, but listen to your body when it is screaming for a break and some rest.  Try this method sometime and see if it works for you.
