Orange Ginger Wontons

This recipe originated from Melissa d’Arabian’s show Ten Dollar Dinners on the Food Network.  Oriental cooking is one of those meals that my kids love, but I am always looking for something new and different to serve up with my usual stir-fry.  These were an instant hit.

True to form, however, I changed the recipe a bit to suit my taste.  I prepared the recipe the original way the first time, but a few of my family members thought the recipe was too salty.  So I doubled the quantity but did not double the salt.  My family and I agreed that less salt tasted better.  Feel free to try it Melissa’s way as well.

Orange Ginger Wontons

2 tablespoons orange marmalade
1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
4 oz. cream cheese
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
24 wonton wrappers
Vegetable oil, for frying
Confectioner’s sugar, for dusting

In a small bowl, mix together orange marmalade, ginger, cream cheese, cinnamon, & salt until well blended.  Fill each wonton wrapper with a teaspoon of filling.  Dip fingertip in water and wet wonton wrapper along all edges of the wonton dough.  Fold in half diagonally into triangles and pinch wontons shut.  Make all the wontons before frying.

Heat oil in heavy-bottomed, straight-sided, medium saute pan or skillet.  Add enough oil to reach up one inch up the pan sides.  Heat over medium-high heat.

Working in batches, carefully fry wontons until golden brown, usually 3-4 minutes, turning once.  Remove onto paper towels to drain.  Allow to cool slightly.  Lightly dust with confectioner’s sugar and serve warm.  Caution:  Filling may be hot.

Wonton wrappers are sold in the refrigerated section of your supermarket.  I found mine in where the salads and tofu are sold.  Thought I would let you know since it might save you the same amount of time that I spent looking for them!  Enjoy!
