January is usually a time to refocus oneself and consider changes we would like to make. This January, I have really been focused on following through in order to keep my house cleaner. I am on the path again to read my chronological Bible. I have been reading the Bible for the last few years in the chronological order which I love. It just makes more sense to me to read it that way. I also have been convicted that I want to be better at lots of things this year, but not perfect.
Are you ready for my next resolution? In December, I found myself digging in my freezer for this and for that in preparation for Christmas dinner or many teenage late night snacks over the holidays. I was kind of surprised and sometimes grossed out by what I found down in the bottom.
I began to think that I really don’t have any system in place to ever purge the freezer out. I usually just go shopping for a two week period. I use most of what I buy with maybe a missed scheduled meal here and there if a friend invited us to dinner or something similar. Less popular items or food which might take more time to prepare gets looked over when it comes time for dinner preparation.
We have a deep freezer in the garage, and it is 3/4 of the way full. What in the world is in the bottom of that thing?
I am excited mainly, because I can start the year with food which I know is fresh. I am not purging everything. I am mainly focusing on meats and other items I know may have been in the freezer for a long while. I have thrown a few things away which did not look good. Like today, I threw away 2 chicken drumsticks which were so freezer burned from the bottom of the freezer that they were white! Uhm, no thank you! If you are not sure about it, then throw it out. Hugging the porcelain throne is not worth a few bucks!
Be creative! Your family might even ooh and aah like mine did to have shrimp and crab cakes on a Monday night with homemade mashed potatoes and gravy. The added bonus of my freezer becoming less and less of a mess is a payoff too! Happy eating!
