The Red Sea Rules

We all go through trials.  The loss of a family member.  A husband who is an alcoholic.  A sick child.  A financially devastating event.  Problems at work.  Struggles with a friend.  A betrayal by a church member.  Parenting issues.

When the storm is raging, it is hard to keep the faith when you feel you are on a boat being tossed too and fro by the wind and the waves.  It can be disheartening when you can’t see the shore for the fog that lays heavy in the air around you.  Feelings of hopeless rise when you have no earthly idea how you are going to get out of the mess you are in.

However, we know God will always provide a way out one way or another.  Charles Spurgeon said, “The Lord will make a way for you where no foot has been before.  That which, like a sea, threatens to drown you, shall be a highway for your escape.”

This book has been such an encouragement to me and can be for you too if you find yourself in a trial in your life right now.  The tag line of the book is “The same God who led you in will lead you out.”

The author, Robert J Morgan, explores the story from Exodus when God leads the Israelites to the Red Sea where they were trapped and being pursued by the Egyptians.  He goes on to show how God lead them to that impossible place only to perform a never seen before miracle to deliver them in a way they would never have expected.  It is a great little devotional book.  Each chapter is only 3-4 pages long so it is short enough to add into your daily devotional time.

One of the quotes in the book which I love was written by Andrew Murray who was a pastor in South Africa.  He wrote it when he was faced with a difficult trial.

“First, He brought me here, it is by His will that I am in this strait place: in that fact I will rest.  Next, He will keep me here in His love, and give me grace to behave as His child.  Then, He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me the lessons He intends me to learn, and working in me the grace He means to bestow.  Last, in His good time He can bring me out again-how and when He knows.

Let me say I am here,
1)     By God’s appointment,
2)     In His keeping,
3)     Under His training,
4)     For His time.”

Be encouraged that no matter what you are going through today, God can lead you out.  Maybe not in the way you thought He would or the way you want to be led out, but He can and will in His time.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
James 1:2-4, ESV
