The Color Me Rad Race

How often does your teenage child come up to you and ask you to participate in an activity with him or her?  This is a rare event in my house these days so I was touched when Madison approached me and asked if I would run with her in the Color Me Rad race.

Making tutus for our big day

The Color Me Rad race is a 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) long race.  The idea is for the runners to wear white and during the race different colors are thrown at you.  You, hopefully, by the end of the race will look like a rainbow or a container of multi-colored sprinkles.  It is all for fun and the color which is thrown at you is actually a non-toxic, colored cornstarch.

Madison and I pre-colored

I have to admit.  I really was not too excited about getting dirty in a race.  On the other hand, I thought it would be a blast to do something fun with my daughter.  We do, after all, only potentially have 3 more years with her at home.  So, we decided to do it.

Madison…looking RAD
Before we left, Carl said, “Good luck, Madison, on your race.”  After she said thank you, I then asked him if he was going to wish me luck.  He then said, “Well, I know you can do it.”  My heart was full when he said that, because it meant he had faith in me and knew I could do it.  That was a far cry from where I started two years ago when I was training and ran the half-marathon.  You can read about when I ran the half-marathon here.

Me…trying to look RAD

It was such a great race.  The atmosphere was fun and full of energy.  It was a very different vibe from the marathon crowd who were much more serious.  This group was there to have fun and fun is what we had.  I told Madison during the run that I preferred the color part to the running part.  The color was fun, but the running was not so much.

Madison & me after the race

I was so proud of Madison.  This was her first time doing any kind of race like this.  She has never really been into competive sports.  It is not really her thing.  She would love to stay curled up in her room with a good book or drawing for hours.  Sounds a little bit like her mother except for the drawing part.  So, I was proud of her for wanting to challenge herself physically and for asking me to come along for the ride.  I was honored.

We had a great time though.  We talked about how we were making memories, and we certainly did.  I will always cherish the memory of us doing this together!

  1. Beautiful! I love your willingness to do something special with your daughter, and create a wonderful memory. And all those colors look great on you two!
