This is a great recipe which I have been using for years, and it is really easy and versatile. I got it originally from the Neelys when they were on the Food Network. This recipe is on the Food Network sight, but they have red peppers listed instead of the onion which was in the original recipe.
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
2 lbs ground beef
1 green pepper, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, mined
salt and pepper to taste
1 8 oz can tomato sauce
3 TB tomato paste
1 cup BBQ sauce
1 TB Worcestershire sauce
1 TB hot sauce, optional
Heat oil in a large skillet and sauté green peppers and onions with the ground beef. Add the minced garlic, salt and pepper. Cook the meat until it is no longer pink and vegetables are tender. Drain the beef mixture in a colander and return to skillet. Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce & hot sauce (optional). Stir and simmer until thickened about 10 minutes. Serve on toasted hamburger buns.
- Use a combination of turkey and ground beef to make the recipe leaner.
- Butter the hamburger buns and sprinkle with garlic salt. I grill them on my large griddle until toasted. It gives the buns a great flavor.
- You can freeze the leftovers due to the quantity and use for a quick freezer meal.
- Use one pound for Sloppy Joe dinner one night and the other pound for another meal. This is what I do. I use the other pound for BBQ salt crusted baked potatoes with cheese and a dollop of sour cream served with a salad. I also use it a lot to make homemade Hot Pockets using crescent rolls stuffed with the BBQ mixture and cheese. Total Yums!
