These fleece scarves are a great idea for a last minute gift idea for a special friend or lady coworker at work. They are super simple to make and super inexpensive to buy.
I first saw them at a football game, and I thought they were really cute. Then, I thought to myself, I could make one myself. So, that is what I decided to do.
For the fabric, you will need:
Three (3) pieces of fleece fabric approximately 60″ in length by 6″ in width
A standard fleece bolt will measure approximately 58″ to 60″. So, when you go to the fabric counter with the three colors or patterns you want, tell them you want 6 inches of each one of your fabrics. You will end up with three pieces of fabric 60″ long and 6″ wide.
Since you are buying such a small amount of fleece, it is very economical. I think from the ones I made I paid $3-$5 per scarf. I had a friend who had a coupon for her fabric and was able to make her scarves for around $2 each.
Here is what you do:
1. Lay out your three pieces of fleece on top of one another. One tip is to try to put the more prominent pattern or color you like on the top and on the bottom. It will be the one you see the most.
2. Try to line up the fabric to match as closely as possible. If one of your pieces is grossly off or cut odd, trim it up as closely as possible. Keep in mind the end result will be one where the fleece folds on top of one another so don’t worry about getting your lines perfect. Life is too short.
3. Pin layers together.
4. Sew a seam lengthwise down your fabric making sure to reinforce your stitching at the ends.
5. Remove pins.
6. Lay a ruler along one edge of the length of your scarf and cut the fleece every one inch widthwise stopping about 1/2 inch from your middle seam. Do not cut through your seam.
7. You’re done. Show the world what a fashionista you really are!
You’re done. Be creative. Invite some ladies over and sew together. Teach your children to sew. Make scarves for the homeless or sick and give them away. Use your imagination and have fun.
